India, the world’s most populous democracy, is going to face its general elections in April 2009. The 100 billion strong Indians will be electing their Parliament members by franchising their valuable votes across the country.
The massive exercise involving close to a million people working under the instructions of the Election Commission is set to be completed with the declaration of results sometime in May 2009.
Given the complexity of the exercise, the Election Commission is planning to conduct the exercise in two or three phases spread across few weeks.
That will help it to use the available security forces and administration machinery optimally and ensure free and fair conduct of the elections.
They will be using Electronic Voting Machines which are expected to be difficult to manipulate and are also easy to manage from security and administration point of view.
